STEA2M Expo
More than 50 WesternU students, faculty and staff participated the inaugural STEA2M Expo at Fairplex, attended by 40,000 registered students. The successor to the long-running experiential Ross/McCracken Learning Expo, this free event — conducted Friday, March 15 & Saturday, March 16 — was designed to engage students from grades K-12 to explore and pursue learning and careers in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Agriculture and Math. WesternU COMP students celebrate matching into residencies
Match Day for Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific students is bigger than ever. But the central message remains the same: These future osteopathic physicians are going where they are needed and where they will make a tremendous impact.
COMP students celebrated Match Day March 15, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Ontario, California. Match Day is celebrated across the U.S. as fourth-year medical students learn which U.S. residency programs they will train in for the next three to seven years. Students opened envelopes at 9 a.m. that revealed the location of their residency.

WesternU COMP-Northwest celebrates Class of 2019 during Match Day
Student-doctors from Western University of Health Sciences’ Oregon campus celebrated another momentous occasion this morning by participating in Match Day Friday, March 15.
All 104 students from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest’s Class of 2019 have placed in residency programs. Of those students, 58 placed into primary care fields including family medicine (27), internal medicine (21), pediatrics (seven), and OB-GYN (three). Students also placed into emergency medicine residency programs (18); psychiatry (five); dermatology (four); general surgery (three); neurology (three) with one child neurology; and anesthesiology (two); among other specialties.

WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine Dean’s Lecture: redefining the role of podiatric medicine
Podiatric physicians and surgeons are trained alongside their allopathic and osteopathic peers, have proven to be equal in their ability to care for patients and should be licensed accordingly.
That was the message from Franklin J. Medio, PhD, keynote speaker for the fourth annual Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine Dean’s Distinguished Lecture March 13, 2019 on WesternU’s Pomona, California campus.
Medio, who is president of Consulting Services for the Health Professions, presented “The Recognition of Podiatric Medicine as a Medical-Surgical Specialty: Breaking Down Barriers through Education and Training.”

Students begin classes at WesternU’s new International Dentist Program
Five students who were professional dentists in their country of origin have started a new 26-month advanced standing International Dentist Program (IDP) at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.
IDP is part of WesternU’s College of Dental Medicine (CDM). It is designed to award a DMD degree to students who have graduated from dental schools outside of the U.S. or Canada.
The inaugural class, who started in March 2019, participate in an intensive 10-week course to expose them to CDM’s curriculum so they can be ready to join fellow second-year dental students in clinical rotations either at the WesternU Health Dental Center or at offsite clinics.

GCBS Associate Professor Fanglong Dong, PhD, along with ARMC Emergency Department physician Dr. Neeki, had three presentations (two podium presentations and one poster presentation) at the 2019 American Academy of Emergency Physician Annual Conference. This team also won first place in podium presentations at this meeting. Their study focused on the safety and efficacy of Tranexamic acid in various clinical conditions.

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) consensus statement on the diagnosis of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in dogs and cats was published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine on February 26, 2019. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jvim.15441. CVM Associate Professor Linda Kidd, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, is co-first author on the manuscript and served as co-chair of the consensus panel.
