President Wilson’s Commencement Address

WesternU’s nine colleges are organizing individual ceremonies to honor Class of 2020 graduates. WesternU President Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD, is opening each of the WesternU College Commencements in a brief video address and then charging the Dean to officiate the academic exercises and oath ceremonies.

WesternU COMP graduates ready to change the world

The osteopathic medical students who honed their skills and embraced humanism at Western University of Health Sciences are ready to change the world, one patient at a time.

WesternU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific held its Commencement, Hooding and Oath Ceremony for its Pomona, California campus May 15, 2020 via Zoom.

WesternU College of Podiatric Medicine graduates ready to move forward and live life

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced clinical rotations to close, Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine Class of 2020 students did not panic, according to CPM Dean V. Kathleen Satterfield, DPM, FACFAOM.

“You could’ve panicked. You could’ve felt sorry for yourselves, but you’re not ‘could’ve’ kind of people,” Satterfield said. “You proved that you wanted to get on with life. That drive is what brought us to this Virtual Oath Ceremony, instead of a long online graduation. That was your choice.”

Satterfield presided over CPM’s Virtual Oath Ceremony May 15, 2020 on Zoom. The College welcomed 36 new Doctors of Podiatric Medicine into the profession. Each graduate appeared on screen as they were hooded by family and friends.

WesternU College of Dental Medicine graduates are prepared to enter a changed world

The world has irrevocably changed in the past few months, but Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine graduates are ready to meet whatever challenges lie ahead.

The College of Dental Medicine (CDM) held a virtual Commencement Pledge Ceremony via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. WesternU President Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD, provided a video message to graduates. CDM Associate Dean Elizabeth Andrews, DDS, MS, administered the Dentist’s Pledge. CDM Professor Jill Lewis, PhD, read the name of each graduate accompanied by a slide with their photo and accomplishments. The graduates were encouraged to don their academic hood when their name was called.

WesternU College of Optometry graduates will continue to learn and grow as health care providers

The Zoom screen slowly began to populate as Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry Class of 2020 graduates joined the ceremony. They waved to each in their caps and gowns, socially distanced but bonded by four years of memories.

WesternU’s College of Optometry held its virtual graduation event on May 14, 2020. “Pomp and Circumstance” played as each graduate’s photo and a quote appeared on screen.

WesternU College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2020: Resilience and Gratitude

Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine’s virtual Oath Ceremony focused on the Class of 2020’s resilience and gratitude.

CVM gathered 101 Class of 2020 graduates on Zoom for its Oath Ceremony May 14, 2020. The ceremony opened with video messages from graduates expressing their gratitude. CVM graduate Kathleen Rowan, DVM ’20, thanked her classmates.

WesternU College of Pharmacy kicks off Class of 2020 ceremonies

With the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down traditional in-person Commencement ceremonies, Western University of Health Sciences’ nine colleges are each honoring Class of 2020 graduates in unique ways.

The College of Pharmacy kicked off the celebrations with the administration of the Pharmacist’s Oath for its 138 Doctor of Pharmacy graduates on Zoom on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. The reading of the oath is not only a tradition, it is an obligation, said College of Pharmacy Dean Daniel Robinson, PharmD, FASHP.

WesternU provides drive-thru diploma pickup for graduates

Capping an academic year unlike any other due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Western University of Health Sciences graduates picked up their diplomas via drive-thru May 15 and May 18, 2020 after celebrating virtual Commencement and oath ceremonies.

WesternU physical therapy, nursing students volunteer at Fairplex COVID-19 testing site

About 20 Western University of Health Sciences students from the College of Graduate Nursing and the College of Health Sciences are helping to collect COVID-19 tests at Fairplex in Pomona, California.

The volunteer work is providing the students important clinical hours and valuable experience as they prepare to graduate and enter the front lines of the COVID-19 response.

College of Pharmacy Year-2 Cardiology Outcomes Fellow Dr. Aya Ozaki, under the Directorship of Dr. Cynthia Jackevicius, published a paper as first author in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, with Dr. Jackevicius as the Senior Author on the paper.

This paper also features COP alumni Drs. Austin Choi and Quan Le, who worked with Dr. Jackevicius during their time on her APPE rotations at the VA Greater Los Angeles HealthCare System.
