WesternU offers pathway to top health careers
Western University of Health Sciences offers career paths toward 16 of the top 20 best health care jobs, according to rankings recently released by U.S. News & World Report.
WesternU is home to nine colleges offering 20 degree programs, including the top two jobs ranked by U.S. News & World Report – dentistry and physician assistant. Also in the top 10 and offered at WesternU are nurse practitioner (No. 4), physician (No. 5), veterinarian (No. 8) and physical therapist (No. 10). For other professions, such as oral and maxillofacial surgeon, anesthesiologist and orthodontist, WesternU provides the starting point to these careers, which require additional specialty training.

Pomona Leadership Network
Two members of the WesternU family were selected by the Pomona Community Foundation to join the second class of the Pomona Leadership Network (PLN), an innovative leadership development program designed to foster the next generation of community leaders in Pomona. After completing the program, graduates will be inspired, informed and equipped to take on high-impact leadership roles in their communities.
College of Pharmacy Assistant Professor Shawn Smith, PharmD, and Executive Assistant to the Chief of Community and Governmental Affairs Patricia Lozano, MBA, were among the 17 community members selected for the PLN Class of 2020.
“WesternU continues its tradition of community leadership with the selection of Ms. Lozano and Dr. Smith to the PLN,” said WesternU Associate Provost Elizabeth Rega, PhD, who serves as a PLN community project mentor and helped with the 2020 cohort program design. “Both bring their unique perspectives, experiences and individual leadership skills in taking their place among the new generation of collaborative leaders in Pomona.”

InfantSEE program at WesternU changes lives
An astute aunt and a national program that provides free eye exams to infants resulted in a life-changing diagnosis at Western University of Health Sciences.
Pomona, California resident Erica Monique Mendoza wasn’t too worried about her son, Levi Henry Cerda. She thought he was developing normally. But her aunt, Judith Mendoza, suggested Levi get examined at WesternU’s Eye Care Institute (ECI). Judith worked as a front office receptionist in the ECI at the time and is now enrolled as a student in the College of Graduate Nursing’s Master of Science in Nursing – Entry program.
When she tried to make Levi smile, it would take him a minute to grasp what he was seeing, Judith said. When placed in his playpen, he would constantly fall down.
“I told Erica that Levi’s behavior was not normal, and she should take advantage of the free eye exam that was offered at WesternU’s Eye Care Institute,” Judith said. “My instincts were that maybe he could not see or maybe he had a more serious issue neurologically.”

Three National Organizations, Three Women Leading Them
College of Optometry Founding Dean Elizabeth Hoppe, OD, MPH, DrPH, is serving as the president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). She is featured along with the presidents of the American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Optometry in a story in Women in Optometry. CVM student Tracy Nguyen (Class of 2022) was recently notified that she was awarded a scholarship to continue her veterinary acupuncture training at the Chi Institute in Florida.
CVM Clinical Assistant Professor of Small Animal Medicine Gillian Angliss, DVM, talked about the importance of developing a wellness plan for pets on “The Pet Buzz,” a Florida-based pet-centered radio show. Click here to read more and to listen to the interview.

Dr. Jessie Atterholt participated in the “Dinosaurs to Deserts” symposium in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Jan. 9-11. Dr. Atterholt was a special guest speaker, and presented a talk on her research titled “The Mysterious World of Vertebral Canals in Birds and Other Archosaurs.” Her featured research is the result of a collaboration with Dr. Mathew Wedel of COMP.
