WesternU to hold annual Ray Symposium April 30
The 9th Annual Ray Symposium at Western University of Health Sciences will focus on the importance of numbers in health care.
The Ray Symposium will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015 in Lecture Hall I of WesternU’s Health Education Center, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766.
The topic, by keynote speaker Ellen Peters, PhD, will be “Numeracy and Health: A Tyranny of Numbers.” A recent Institute of Medicine report on Health Literacy and Numeracy points out that there is considerable variation in the way people understand and use numbers in making everyday decisions. Because of the serious implications in making health-related decisions, this symposium will be of importance to any health provider who communicates risk, benefit, or uses numerical data in communicating with patients.
Dr. Peters is a professor in the Psychology Department and Director of the Behavioral Decision Making Initiative at The Ohio State University. In her research, Dr. Peters focuses on understanding the basic building blocks of human judgment and decision-making. She is a recognized leader in risk perception and communication and the psychology of health decision-making, publishing papers on the effects of affect and emotion, numeracy and number processing, and aging.
