Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., has expanded its medical practices into the Inland Empire.

Western University Medical Center – Milliken, at 8112 Milliken Ave., Suite 101-2 in Rancho Cucamonga, opened on Jan. 7, 2008.

The 1,722-square-foot medical center’s staff includes David Connett, DO, FACOFP, assistant dean of postgraduate education development and medical director of the clinic system at WesternU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP), Rajivinder S. Brar, DO, PhD, assistant professor of family medicine, Nancy Alexander, PA-C, and medical assistant Maria Valadez. The center is expected to handle 400 patients per month by the end of the first year and 600 patients per month by the end of the second year.

"There is an area of need when comes to primary care physicians," Connett said. "We feel we are able to fill that void. We want people to feel like they’re walking into Nordstrom, that they’re getting the best care in the region."

The medical center has five exam rooms, including one with an osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) table, Elliot said. Patients can expect high-quality family medicine provided by board-certified, academic physicians, he said.

"This is the first phase in growing our faculty practice," Elliot said. "We are not only providing quality health care to people in the Inland Empire, we are providing teaching opportunities for students and eventually for residencies."

National statistics show that a teaching practice traditionally yields higher quality and better patient satisfaction, Elliot said.

Watching the early development of the medical center will help students, Brar said.

"This will be educational for those who want to go on to build their own practice," he said.

The medical center, which will accept most insurance plans, will reach out to the local chamber of commerce, area health plans and other organizations create awareness in the community, Elliot said.

All of the health care providers at the medical center are patient oriented, Alexander said. Starting at a new center is exciting, with top-of-the-line equipment and the anticipation of watching it grow, she said.

The Milliken site complements the services provided at Western University Medical Center at 887 E. Second St. in Pomona.
