Western University of Health Sciences’ Towne & Gown Golf Classic raised more than $15,000 to benefit the University Scholarship Fund, thanks to the generosity of sponsor T.F. Chen, DDS, who underwrote the entire golf fundraiser.

Ninety-two golfers participated in the scramble-format tournament on Monday, June 20, 2011, at the Glendora Country Club, which got underway with a shotgun start at noon.

WesternU Senior Vice President Thomas Fox, PhD, said he hopes the tournament is the first in a long run of golf outings, and is excited that Dr. Chen is already looking for a date for next year’s event.

The tourney included several on-course contests, which made for an enjoyable day on the links. Golfers also were able to purchase 5 feet of string, mulligans, and free tosses that provided them special advantages to improve scores.

WesternU Founding President Philip Pumerantz, PhD, and board member John T. McGwire, DDS, drove a beverage cart around the golf course several times, meeting and talking with everyone.

A reception followed with dinner and awards. Fox and Pumerantz worked as a team, announcing the award winners and distributing trophies.

Awards included straightest drive and longest drive competitions for men and women; reverse Stableford scoring for the four teams who scored the highest gross scores; and four winning teams that had the lowest gross scores.

“”Our goal was to make friends and have a good time, and we achieved all of that,”” said Fox. “”This first-year tournament was successful because we priced it more as a ‘friend-raiser’ than a fundraiser.””

College of Pharmacy Dean Daniel Robinson, College of Podiatric Medicine Dean Lawrence Harkless, College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Phillip Nelson, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific Dean Clinton Adams and College of Dental Medicine Dean Steven Friedrichsen all participated in the tournament.
