Health Screening & Resource Fair

Ray Bradbury to Visit WesternU
Renowned author Ray Bradbury will make a special appearance at WesternU on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010 as part of Pomona’s “Fahrenheit 451” Big Read.
As part of the Big Read and Banned Books Week, which runs Sept. 25-Oct. 2, the Pumerantz Library will feature a special display of controversial medical books, including “Pernkopf Anatomy,” and some consumer health books that have been banned, as well as “Fahrenheit 451” and other fiction. The “Banned Books Display” will remind students and visitors not to take freedom for granted. The display runs Sept. 25 to Oct. 31, 2010.

Kudos on accomplishments
Dr. Mathew Wedel of COMP and CPM attended the 58th Symposium on Vertebrate Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy, Sept. 14-17, at Cambridge University in England. He presented a talk titled, “Caudal pneumaticity and pneumatic hiatuses in the sauropod dinosaurs Giraffatitan and Apatosaurus,” and was second author on a talk by Dr. Mike Taylor titled, “Why giraffes have such short necks.”

Marcia Gillman Tassinari, PT, MPT, an alum from the Charter MPT Class of 1994, was interviewed and gave a presentation on posture on the Morning Show San Diego, which aired Monday, Sept. 13, on NBC (see link below). Marcia and her husband/classmate, Russell, own Tassinari Physical Therapy in Pacific Beach.

PA week is coming Oct. 6-12. National PA Week is celebrated every year and it is a time to support, celebrate and recognize Physician Assistants. Please keep watching This Week@WesternU for the festivities that the PA Class 2012 will be planning.
Congratulations to Tina Boykin, MPH, MS, PA-C, who was awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration grant for Equipment to Enhance Training for Health Professionals. Tina is the PI of the grant. She wrote the grant with assistance from another PA faculty member, Paige McNamara, MS, PA-C. More than $100,000 will be used to purchase simulation manikins for PA education. Funding for this grant was supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

Kudos on accomplishments
Dr. Karl Hess’s International Travel Health Clinic at Hendricks Pharmacy was one of two practices that was submitted by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) to the Congressional Offices as part of a Call for Successful Practices to help push legislation forward on an amendment to the Jobs Bill.
Dr. Janice Hoffman talked about “Substance Abuse in the Elderly beyond Alcohol” in a program called “Aging with Power” on KHTS AM 1220 on Sept. 14. Listen to the podcast here.
Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administration Anandi Law and Amir Zargarzadeh had the following article published in the International Journal of Pharmacy Practice: Law, A.
