A Tribute to Caring

Join us on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel & Conference Center in Pomona to help raise funds for student scholarships. Guests at the “A Tribute to Caring” gala will enjoy a hosted reception, a sumptuous dinner, an entertaining program, and after-dinner dancing and mingling.

WesternU will honor WesternU Board of Trustees Chairman Richard A. Bond, DO ’82, DrPH, with the Commitment to Stewardship Award and Solomon Hamburg, PhD, MD, with the Doctors with Heart Award.

Registration and reception will begin at 6:30. Dinner and program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Innovation Day 2019

WesternU’s Center for Innovation will hold Innovation Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019 on the second floor of the Health Education Center. The event will include presentations by WesternU deans and administrators, information about the OrthoBistro Clinic model, telemedicine, academic innovation and artificial intelligence, along with raffle prizes and a “Cakeathon” challenge. The expo will feature medical technology vendors for students, faculty and staff to experience the latest technological trends in health care.

One Health Day

WesternU will hold One Health Day events on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2, 2019 on the WesternU Pomona campus, with live streaming to WesternU Oregon. The 2nd annual WesternU One Health Panel will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 1. The WesternU One Health Symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 2. Students will present posters on both days on the topic “Researching Relationships in One Health.”

The official observance of One Health Day is Nov. 3. One Health Day raises awareness about the One Health approach to complex health problems involving people, animals and the environment.

Associate Professor and Department Chair of Internal Medicine Emmanuel “Mike” Katsaros, DO, received the 2019 Teacher of the Year Award at the American College of Physicians Southern California Regional II Conference.

Professor Brion Benninger, MD, MSc, presented several projects at the International Federation of Anatomy Associations in London, England in August 2019, including “Human Macro & Micro Sectional Anatomy Art from Frozen Cuts to Cryomacrotome to Block-Face Microscopy: Chronological Evolution to 3D and Virtual Human Anatomy.” His presentation on detailed and stunning vascular human anatomy from cadavers where he combined a novel contrast agent while acquiring images from one of only two 4D Helical Micro CT scanners in the world made him the first person to reveal such images of human anatomy created from 7 micron slices. He also presented on the benefits of using a novel handheld ultrasound probe with built in artificial intelligence on cadavers titled “Innovative Handheld wireless Ultrasound-Probe-System Utilizing Artificial Intelligence for Teaching Face-to-Face Sonoanatomy with Human Cadavers for Lab and Distance Learning via Cloud.”

CVM Associate Professor David Kersey contributed content and editing to a children’s book for National Geographic. Absolute Expert: Pandas, was published August 2019, and for his effort Dr. Kersey is acknowledged as a contributing expert (pg 112) and with a photo (pg 96). Dr. Kersey also coauthored a book chapter, “Comprehensive Breeding Techniques for the Giant Panda.” The chapter summarizes the major research findings over the past 20 years that have contributed to the successful captive breeding program for the giant panda. Below is the full citation:
