Pumerantz Lectureship to be held Oct. 24, 2013

The fifth annual Dr. Philip Pumerantz Distinguished Lectureship at Western University of Health Sciences will feature Louis W. Sullivan, MD, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) as keynote speaker.

The Pumerantz Lecture will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 in Lecture Hall II of WesternU’s Health Education Center, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766. The lecture will be streamed live to COMP-Northwest’s Lecture Hall II.

Health Fair

PCHAT will hold a free health fair from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 in the Mendoza Center auditorium, 851 S. Hamilton Blvd., Pomona, Calif. Health screenings and middle school sports physicals will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Email PCHAT@westernu.edu for more information.

Kudos on accomplishments

Second-year College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest student Kurtis Webster earned the World Congress of Ultrasound in Medical Education 2013 Research Award.

He presented a research poster at the World Congress of Ultrasound in Medical Education conference, held Sept. 27-29, 2013 in South Carolina. His poster was the only one recognized out of 100 presentations by students, faculty and residents. Click here to read the full story.

Department of Physical Therapy Education News

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Christine Eddow, PT, DPT, OCS, WCS, CHT, who was recently accepted into the Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy (DSc) program at Loma Linda University. The DSc in Physical Therapy is a research-oriented doctorate degree designed for the physical therapist who wishes to pursue advanced studies in the area of education, research, basic science, and advanced clinical practice.

Dr. Jerry Minsky authored a continuing education course titled, “Special Needs Patients: Evaluation and Treatment.” The course was published Sept. 22, 2013 by PennWell Publishing, Tulsa, Okla. The course was translated into Spanish and was released online in Mexico.

Drs. Sheree Aston and John Tegzes led a national American Interprofessional Health Collaborative (AIHC) IPE webinar on “An Institutional Case Study: Providing Interprofessional Education at a Satellite Campus” on Sept. 30, 2013.

Alumni News

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the WesternU Alumni Association hosted a reception at Border Grill in Las Vegas during the American Osteopathic Association’s OMED Convention. More than 175 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and guests stopped by to meet newly-appointed COMP Dean Paula Crone, DO ’92, catch up with former classmates, and enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks.

On Friday, Oct. 4, the Alumni Association hosted a reception at the Renaissance Hotel in Palm Springs during the California Academy of Physician Assistants Annual Conference. College of Allied Health Professions Dean Stephanie Bowlin, MSHPE ’92, was on hand to greet the more than 75 alumni, students, faculty, staff, and guests in attendance.

The ECC is giving away a limited number of backpacks filled with school supplies as an incentive to bring your child in for a comprehensive eye examination.
