Department of Physician Assistant Education News

The commencement awards dinner was celebrated this past week for the graduating 2010 students in the College of Allied Health Professions. The evening was full of excitement as the program awards were given to students from the College. The dinner provided an atmosphere of fun and enthusiasm. Overall it was a very memorable evening.

The next day, we celebrated graduation. The PA 2010 class looked so regal in their caps and gowns. The ceremony was highlighted with “hooding” from family members. From the faculty and staff, we want to congratulate the PA 2010 class for achieving one more goal on their way to the PA Profession. You all worked very hard and the fruits of your labor will be rewarded in the very near future. Congratulations to you all.

From the College of Veterinary Medicine:

Kudos on accomplishments

Western University Veterinary College faculty members Drs. Hrvoje Smodlaka, Wael Khamas and Suzana Tkalcic, together with CVM alumna Trudy Golub, DVM ’09, and Dr. Lauren Palmer of the Marine Mammal Care Center have published their paper titled “Histological Assessment of Selected Blood Vessels of the Phocid Seals (Northern Elephant and Harbour Seals).” This work appears in the leading journal of World Association of Veterinary Anatomists. The study described in this paper was funded through a WUHS Intramural grant and investigates vascular adaptations that play a vital role in blood pressure regulation and distribution of oxygenated blood during prolonged deep diving in these animals.

Palomares Day

On Wednesday, May 19, the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) held their annual Palomares Day where they invited the entire seventh grade class of Palomares Middle School for a day filled with activities from many colleges. More than 100 seventh graders participated in interactive sessions made possible by more than 30 COMP, DPM and OD students creating an enjoyable day for the students. The students took part in lectures by Dr. Redding, Dr. Rega, Dr. Truong, Dr. Waldhalm, OD students Katherine Gillett and Christine Pham and COMP student Joseph Shadpour, OMS-I, and Co-Chair of LMSA. Students also received a motivational lecture by President Pumerantz. Each student received a T-shirt, a healthy lunch and many received prizes as well, all made possible by fundraising through LMSA’s Medical Spanish course held in April. LMSA thanks everyone who helped make this event possible and we look forward to Palomares Day 2011.
