Department of Physical Therapy Education News

Associate Professor Georgeanne Vlad, PT, MA, was a speaker at the 5th Annual Health Professions Conference sponsored by the Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) Caduceus Club. About 1,000 students attended the all-day event recently held on the Mt. SAC campus with this year’s theme “Piecing Together the Future of Medicine: Where Do You Fit In?” Professor Vlad participated in two panel presentations in the morning and in the afternoon addressed a group of more than 50 students interested in pursuing a career in physical therapy.

All 39 graduates from WesternU’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Class of 2010 passed the National Physical Therapy Examination for licensure. Click here for the full story.

Kudos on accomplishments

Dr. Eric Gupta has been awarded the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award among 35 other fraternities by the Professional Fraternity Association for his work in Kappa Psi. The WesternU Kappa Psi chapter won the PFA Outstanding Professional Program Award for 2011.

Dr. Cynthia Jackevicius had several recent publications:

Lazarus DL, Jackevicius CA, Behlouli H, Johansen H, Pilote L. Population-based analysis of the class effect of beta-blockers in heart failure. Am J Cardiol 2011;107:1196-1202. The authors found no evidence of a class effect for beta blockers in patients with heart failure.

Tsadok MA, Jackevicius CA, Rahme E, Essebag V, Eisenberg MJ, Humphries KH, Tu JV, Behlouli H, Joo J, Pilote L. Amiodarone induced thyroid dysfunction- brand versus generic formulations. CMAJ 2011. DOI:10.1503/cmaj.101800. Jennifer Joo, PharmD 2012 candidate, worked as a summer student with Dr. Jackevicius as a recipient of a WesternU Summer Research Fellowship Program Grant.

Dr. Megan Nguyen published a paper along with Dr. Jeffrey Wang – another great example of interdepartmental collaboration. Nguyen MH, Eells SJ, Tan J, Sheth CT, Omari B, Flores M, Wang J, Miller LG. Dr. Olivia Phung published a paper with her colleagues at Hartford Hospital. This research was a mixed-treatment comparison meta-analysis looking at oral anti-diabetic drugs in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. Phung OJ, Sood NA, Sill BE, Coleman CI.
