WesternU faculty member receives Congressional Recognition Award
Western University of Health Sciences Vice President for External and Clinical Affairs David Baron, DO, MSEd, received a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from U.S. Rep. Judy Chu on Dec. 18, 2018. The award was in recognition of Dr. Baron’s scholarly diplomacy while serving as the 2018 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Brain Science, a program funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Dr. Baron worked at the University of Calgary and lectured at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia on youth sports concussion as his Fulbright project.

WesternU View Spring 2018 edition wins CASE District VII award
The Spring 2018 edition of WesternU View, which featured a tribute to WesternU Founding President Philip Pumerantz, earned a CASE District VII Silver Award in the category of General Interest Magazines for circulation less than 30,000. CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) is a membership association serving educational institutions and the advancement professionals who work on their behalf in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing and allied areas.

Kudos on accomplishments
Brion Benninger, MD, MSc, Professor, Executive Director, Medical Anatomy Center, and Albany Fire & Rescue paramedic Jonathan Mang taught airway skills to third- and fourth-year medical students on Dec. 19, 2018. They combined Eagle Vision video laryngoscopy with 7-Sigma hi-fidelity simulators enabling students to video record their individual intubations. They taught the conventional endotracheal placement grip and the Kiwi grip while using the Eagle Vision laryngoscope. They also taught how ultrasound can be used to determine proper endotracheal tube placement. Dr. Benninger uses the Eagle Vision video laryngoscope to train medical students because it allows video to be conducted and saved to a separate computer for additional anatomy and technique teaching opportunities.
They taught cricothyrotomy procedures on a novel apparatus which Dr. Benninger is providing feedback for further development. It allows each person to conduct a cricothyrotomy using an actual field kit providing the most lifelike experience currently offered.

Imperial College Trauma ’18 Conference
College of Dental Medicine students Chrystopher Perez and Gregory Marchese presented at the Imperial College Trauma ’18 Conference Nov. 16-20, 2018 in London.
During the four-day conference, Perez and Marchese completed daily lecture sessions and 18 hours of workshop training in trauma procedures such as emergency intubation, surgical emergency procedures, suture training and C-Spine management.
Perez presented Dr. Jeffrey Elo’s case titled “Canine Trauma: Partial Ear Avulsion and Staged Reconstruction.” Marchese presented Dr. Elo’s case titled “Nasoorbitoethmoid Fracture from Horse Kick to Face.”
Third-year CDM student Shaahin Dadjoo served as a mentor to Perez and Marchese during their preparation for this competition, and all three students were under the guidance of LECA founder Dr. Hooman Mir. LECA (Learning Enrichment in Clinical Anatomy) helps prepare students for advanced medical, dental or health professional graduate-level clinical and surgical anatomy.
Mir presented a workshop, “Review of surgical techniques in Lower Extremity Amputation.”
“We could not have done this work for the third year in a row without the help and support from CDM Dean Steven Friedrichsen and Dr. Bradley Henson. I feel extremely blessed that I have their support and mentorship here at WesternU,” Mir said. “Lastly, we cannot express our gratitude enough to Dr. Elo for providing these amazing trauma cases for our students to present at this event. We are grateful that we were given the opportunity once more to shine light on the trauma aspect of dental medicine at this prestigious international competition.”

Kudos on accomplishments
CVM Associate Professor Brian Oakley recently accepted an invitation to join the editorial board of the journal PLOS ONE as an academic editor.
Dr. Lyon Lee was one of several invited speakers to present a talk at the 3rd International Symposium of Veterinary Teaching Hospital Directors which was held for two days in Beijing, China, last month. Dr. Lee and several veterinary teaching hospital directors from U.S. veterinary colleges such as Cornell University and the University of Florida were present as well as more than 200 other attendees. Dr. Lee presented a talk titled “Responsibilities of Teaching Institutions for Veterinary Students Entering into a Rapidly Changing Industry.” He also served as a panelist along with other speakers who discussed the U.S. veterinary teaching hospital’s role in education and its past, present and future challenges.
Dr. Steven Henriksen, Vice President for Research and Biotechnology, Dr. Lyon Lee, Professor of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Dr. Young Joo Kim, Assistant Professor of Small Animal Surgery, were invited to present talks at the inaugural seminar commemorating and celebrating the official MOU signing between Duksung University in Seoul, Korea, and Western University of Health Sciences. The seminar was attended by more than 100 faculty, staff and students, mainly from the College of Pharmacy and the topics included “Future of pharmacy education in the coming decades” and “Veterinary anesthetic pharmacology overview.”
