Blood Drive

A University Blood Drive hosted by COMP will be held today and Wednesday, Feb. 16-17, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., on the first floor of the Health Professions Center (HPC). Walk-ins are welcome. All donors will receive a coupon for a free appetizer from Mimi’s Café. The need for blood is constant and the gratification of giving is instant. Give blood!

The American Physical Therapy Association will hold its annual Combined Sections Meeting in San Diego this week. The WesternU Alumni Association is sponsoring a reception on Thursday, Feb. 18 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Sapphire L Room of the Hilton Bayfront Hotel located at 1 Park Boulevard adjacent to the convention center. Kudos on accomplishments

Dr. Susan Jacob recently traveled to Dubai, UAE to present a poster, "Medication Absorption Post-Bariatric Surgery with Emphasis on Management of Vitamin Deficiencies," and an invited talk, "Current Therapies in Irritable Bowel Syndrome," at the 2nd International Conference on Drug Discovery & Therapy.

She also presented "New Drug Updates in Primary Care," at the Department of Veterans Affairs Advanced Practitioner Nurse Conference, February 2010, Ontario, Calif.

At the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA) Annual Meeting (Outlook), held in Long Beach, Calif., from Feb 4-7, our faculty was busy:

Dr. Janice Hoffman presented a CE on "Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: Beyond Calcium and Vitamin D" on Sunday, Feb. 7.

Dr. Karl Hess presented the CE on "Nonprescription medication update 2010" immediately following Dr. Hoffman’s CE.

Several of our faculty (Drs. Gupta, Hata, Hess, Hoffman, Klotz, Shimomura, Schwartzman) were involved in committees and house of delegates.

And last but not least, Dr. Eric Gupta was sworn in as the CPhA president for 2010-11!

Dr. Jeany Jun presented a poster along with COMP faculty Dr. Zuhra Musherraf at The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) 36th Annual Predoctoral Education Conference in Jacksonville, Florida, Jan. 28-31, 2010:

Dr. Cynthia Jackevicius had two invited presentations at the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists Professional Practice Conference in Toronto last week:

"Here’s Your Script…You’ll Be Fine: Barriers to Medication Adherence" and "Where Can Pharmacy Take Me? Exploring Unique Pharmacy Career Opportunities."

Drs. Donald Hsu and Megan Nguyen published an article under the Clinical Practice Capsule section in the Winter 2010 volume of the California Pharmacist, titled: "Update on Common Sports-Related Skin Infections."
