Lt. Gov. Newsom tops slate of esteemed speakers at WesternU's Commencement ceremonies

Top education, health and political leaders will inspire Western University of Health Sciences graduates as they celebrate the beginning of their health professions careers.

WesternU will hold Commencement ceremonies for its Pomona, Calif. colleges in Pasadena, Calif. May 20-22, 2015. These ceremonies, along with the inaugural Commencement for WesternU’s Lebanon, Oregon campus June 5, will mark the final graduation ceremonies presided over by Founding President Philip Pumerantz, PhD, who will retire in September after leading WesternU since its inception in 1977. California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom will address the colleges of Podiatric Medicine and Allied Health Professions at 9:30 a.m. May 20. Patricia Chase, Gates Wigner Dean for the School of Pharmacy at West Virginia University, will speak at the colleges of Dental Medicine and Pharmacy ceremony at 3 p.m.

University of La Verne President Devorah Lieberman, PhD, will address the colleges of Optometry and Graduate Nursing at 9:30 a.m. May 21. Clinton A. Lewis Jr., executive vice president and president of U.S. Operations at Zoetis, will serve as the keynote speaker for the College of Veterinary Medicine ceremony at 3 p.m.

WesternU’s Commencement ceremonies will conclude at 9:30 a.m. May 22 with the Graduate College of Biomedical Sciences and the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. Vice Admiral Matthew L. Nathan, Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, will serve as the keynote speaker.

WesternU’s COMP-Northwest campus in Lebanon, Oregon will celebrate its first Commencement June 5, with Jeff Heatherington, founder, president and CEO of FamilyCare Health Plans, and Dr. Larry Mullins, president and CEO of Samaritan Health Services Inc., serving as the keynote speakers.

More than 1,100 students will receive their degrees during these ceremonies. At the conclusion of these ceremonies, Dr. Pumerantz will have conferred degrees upon more than 12,000 WesternU graduates during his esteemed tenure as president.
