WesternU staff and faculty on the Pomona campus helped raise more than $4,200 benefiting the University Scholarship Fund during the fifth annual Faculty and Staff Summer Scholarship Fair Friday, July 20, 2012.

A big hit, and new this to this year’s fair, were salsa making and cupcake decorating contests.

Salas contest winners were Omar Alvarado (College of Veterinary Medicine) for heat, Theresa Ortiz (University Advancement) for presentation and Toni Litke (Financial Aid) for overall flavor.

Cupcake contest winners were Beverly Carter (Academic Affairs) for taste, Danielle Roane (University Advancement) for individual cupcake decoration, and Amanda Anglin (College of Podiatric Medicine) for overall presentation.

They were judged by Bethany Lopez, TSgt, U.S. Air Force; Master Sgt. Tanisha Dar-Khan, U.S. Air Force; Kathy Roche, public affairs manager, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center; Jan Mazur, area representative, Inter Valley Health Plan; Abby Castillo, director of administration, Community Senior Services; and Frank Garcia, executive director, Pomona Chamber of Commerce.

More than 30 baskets or items were donated for a silent auction. In addition, there were casino games, the Dr. Ben Cohen Nok Hockey Tournament, and $3 taco lunches.

WesternU Senior Vice President Thomas Fox, PhD, defended his title as champion of the Nok Hockey Tournament.
