Fresno State wants to start a doctoral program in nursing that officials say would train more teachers to help solve the region’s health care worker shortage.

But first, California State University leaders must persuade lawmakers to give Fresno State and other campuses permission to launch the program at a time when universities are under financial strain.

…The University of California offers research-oriented Ph.Ds in nursing, but only three universities in California offer the more clinically-focused DNP, or Doctorate of Nursing Practice: the University of San Francisco, the University of San Diego and the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona.
