Bako Diagnostics provided a soft tissue biopsy workshop on Feb. 28, 2025 for Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine students, taught by Javan Bass, DPM, FACFAS. Bako Diagnostics provided pigs feet and several instruments to practice biopsy techniques, including a 2mm and a 3mm punch, atraumatic forceps, a scalpel, and a 3mm dermal curette.

Dr. Bass is a board-certified reconstructive foot and ankle surgeon practicing in Atlanta, Georgia. He serves as a podiatric medical advisor, clinical consultant and speaker for Bako Diagnostics. He returned to WesternU for the second consecutive year to provide instruction to CPM students. He said he enjoys giving this presentation, and last year’s group of students were a lively group who were interactive and full of questions.

“They were very eager to learn about what they can do make sure their future is secure,” Bass said.

The lessons learned here will be vital in diagnosing the early stages of cancer while also protecting these future practitioners from liability.

“This is a very active, hands-on workshop,” Bass said. “You are going to learn some diagnostic tools, tips and tricks. You’re going to sharpen your diagnostic skills. This is not just about the function, but it’s about the diagnosis – knowing when to do the biopsy because that’s half the battle there. Improving your patient care.”
