Commencement 2010
The 29th Annual Commencement Exercises for Western University of Health Sciences will be held on May 20-21, 2010 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, 300 E. Green St., Pasadena, Calif.
Here are some important reminders to graduates regarding commencement. Please forward to friends and family as appropriate.
Graduate Reminders
Regalia: Remember your cap, gown and tassel. A bag/coat check will be provided. Also, if you purchased your own hood, remember to give it to your family hooders. Remember that your family hooders need to bring their Family Hooder Passes to be admitted to the Loge Family Hooder Seating area.
Commencement Web site: The commencement Web site at http://www.westernu.edu/commencement/ has all kinds of useful information including parking maps, directions, and instructions. Please pull all necessary information from the site before heading to the Pasadena Civic Auditorium!
Live Webcast: We are pleased to announce that the commencement ceremonies will be Webcast live at http://www.westernu.edu/commencement/live-start.htm. Please let those who are not attending know, so they can watch you online! Click here for more information on the live Webcast.
Ordering Photos: Many professional photos will be taken at graduation – if you’re interested in purchasing any of these photos please pick up an orange photography contact info sheet in the Gold Room or at the outside information booth.
Guest Reminders
Doors Close Early: The front doors will close at 9:20 for AM ceremonies and 2:50 for PM ceremonies and will re-open after the processional, invocation and national anthem. It’s essential that all of your guests are seated in the auditorium prior to the doors closing. If your friends/relatives tend to be late… you might tell them it starts 30 minutes earlier.
Tickets Required (for CAHP/CGN and COMP ceremonies): Remember your tickets, as all attendees must have a ticket to enter the auditorium! All tickets have been distributed to graduates so we unfortunately do not have any more to give. For ticket questions, contact Cathy Davis (cdavis@westernu.edu).

Department of Physical Therapy Education News
Associate Professor and Chair, Dee Schilling, PT, PhD, contributed to the article “Learning Together: Interprofessional Education Programs" which was published in the April issue, pages 22-27, of PT in Motion by the American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Schilling was interviewed earlier this year by the author, Chris Hayhurst, and is quoted several times throughout the article in speaking about WesternU’s IPE curriculum and the interdisciplinary patient care center.
Department of Physician Assistant Education News
PA students participated in a health fair at the Diamond Bar YMCA this past weekend. The students provided vision, glucose, blood pressure, and BMI checks for the community. PA faculty members Ryan Junsay and Roy Guizado assisted the students at the event.
The first year PA students are currently engaging in interviews with people who have congenital or acquired disabilities. The students really like this assignment because it gives them a better appreciation for the challenges that people with disabilities must face.
Congratulations to two PA students who received the East West Scholarship last week. They are Lan Quach, PA-S ’11, and Melissa Mixon, PA-S ’11, who were both very deserving recipients.

Dr. Michael Cohen, President of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, spoke to a crowd of more than 250 attendees on the topic of medication safety at the annual Ray Symposium on April 15.

East West Scholarship Dinner
On Saturday, April 17 the 2010 East West Scholarship Dinner recognized Chi Vi Tran, PharmD as a special honoree on behalf of the CVS Caremark Corporation. CVS was a Silver Sponsor along with Wal-Mart for the East West Scholarship Dinner.

COP Gifts
CVS Caremark Charitable Trust has provided a grant of $5,000 to be used to support pharmacy student scholarships. Total support from CVS for 2009-2010 is now at just over $95,000 dollars. The College of Pharmacy was pleased to also welcome and recognize Papatya Tankut, R.Ph. (VP of Pharmacy Professional Services) on Wednesday, April 21 for her support of the new CVS Caremark Student Pharmacist Services Suite.

Citrus Exhibit
The “Citrus and Health” exhibit hosted by The Pumerantz Library will be open through April 30. The collection is being presented by Richard Barker, retired banker and founder and president of the Citrus Roots – Preserving Citrus Heritage Foundation. Among the items on display are citrus crate labels, photographs of the citrus industry, magazine advertisements, reamers, home remedies, and more. The collection is open to the public Monday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Invite your family and friends.
