World Health Day is April 7, 2010. The focus is urbanization and health. The campaign slogan is “1000 cities – 1000 lives.” Worldwide events call on cities to open up public spaces to health, whether it is activities in parks, town hall meetings, clean-up campaigns, and others. Urban health champions will be highlighted to illustrate what people are doing to improve health in their cities. For more information, visit the World Health Organization Web site.
Kudos on accomplishments
Congratulations to Allison Fitzsimmons, DPT class of 2012, on her recent selection as a student representative to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) House of Delegates. Allison was one of three students selected from a large pool of applications received from students in all the California PT and PTA programs. Allison will begin her role as a student delegate by participating in the House of Delegates meeting at the Annual APTA Conference this June in Boston.
Kudos to the Interprofessional Indoor Soccer team, the “Bumble Bees,” for winning the season championship March 21 held at the Upland Arena. The team, which had a 10-1 record for the season, consisted of DPT 2010 students – Candice Schmutzler, Mary Pongetti, and Betty Chen; DPT 2011 students – Adam Zollinger, Jenna Tomlinson, Ben Turner, and Liz Alexander; DPT 2012 student Kyle Green; COP 2013 student Ben Walker; MSN 2012 student Dawn Turner; and COP Professor Dr. Fadi Khasawneh.

Kudos on accomplishments
Four WesternU DNP students – Christine Magladry, Candace Malson, Gloria Huerta, and Susan Nelson – participated with 135 nursing students from around the country in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) inaugural Nursing Student Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. last week and were inducted into the AACN Policy Academy. Sponsored by the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence and the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future, the summit coincided with AACN’s 2010 Spring Annual Meeting and featured a variety of presentations by policy experts, interactive discussions with Washington insiders, lobbying visits to U.S. members of Congress, strategic networking opportunities, and the passage of historic national health care policy legislation.
Haiti fundraiser
The MSN-E Class of 2013 helped organize an interprofessional futsal/soccer tournament in honor of Daniel Kloos, who died in the Jan. 23 earthquake in Haiti. Daniel had been accepted to join COMP this August as a member of the class of 2014. The tournament raised more than $1,200 for the orphanage Daniel was visiting at the time in Haiti. Other clubs and colleges also participated by conducting food sales during the tournament. Click here for more information and photos.

Open House
CVM will hold an open house, “All Creatures Great & Small,” on campus from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 3. Activities include Student Club booths, tips on pet care, games and giveaways, campus tours, learn about becoming a veterinarian, Aquarium of the Pacific’s Aquarium on Wheels, pet microchipping, L.A. County K-9 Unit demonstrations, shelter pet adoptions, rabies vaccinations for pets, In-N-Out Burger, snacks and drinks.

The Harriet K. & Philip Pumerantz Library is celebrating National Library Week by co-sponsoring with the WesternU LEAD department the lecture series “Start Strong… Finish Stronger.” Topics will include everything students need to get through finals, such as how to study, gathering and organizing citations, writing a better paper, and how to prepare and present presentations.
National Library Week will also include a week-long book sale, special displays and a Fine Free Friday.

Citrus Exhibit
The “Citrus and Health” exhibit hosted by The Pumerantz Library has been extended through April 30. The collection is being presented by Richard Barker, retired banker and founder and president of the Citrus Roots – Preserving Citrus Heritage Foundation. Among the items on display are citrus crate labels, photographs of the citrus industry, magazine advertisements, reamers, home remedies, and more. The collection is open to the public Monday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends. Invite your family and friends. The Western University of Health Sciences Pre-Health Advisor Conference
will be held on campus from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2010.
