Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) has extended the

application deadline for the Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program to

July 15 to better accommodate students.

Donna Redman-Bentley, PhD, PT, chair of the department of physical therapy

education, said the extension was made to assist students who applied to

other programs.

“”We wanted to take into account those students who were not notified of

acceptance to other programs until after our earlier deadline,”” Dr. Redman-

Bentley said. “”That gives those students an opportunity to start our

program in January rather than wait an entire year to be accepted

somewhere else.””

Under new guidelines, the 10-year limit on prerequisite coursework has

been withdrawn. Also, the Office of Admissions will consider holding

students who have already been awarded a master’s degree or attained a

grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above in at least 15 postgraduate

units exempt from the undergraduate GPA requirement of 2.5. Lastly,

students are now permitted to be enrolled in up to three prerequisite

classes at the time of application.

Additional entrance requirements are a bachelor’s degree from an

accredited college or university, plus coursework in human anatomy, human

physiology, general chemistry, physics, psychology, statistics and English

composition. Official transcripts, 100 hours of work experience in a

physical therapy setting, and Graduate Record Examination test results

also are required.

The MPT program at WesternU began in 1992. It is accredited by the

Commission on Accreditation on Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the

American Physical Therapy Association. The program is two years plus 16

weeks in length, and made up of classroom and laboratory experience as

well as hands-on work in a variety of clinical settings. There is room for

54 new students to join the program each year.

The WesternU Office of Admissions expects to select January’s MPT students

by the end of September. Classes begin January. 3. For more information,

contact the Office of Admissions at (909) 623-6116.
