Psychiatrist Lectures on Scientific Approach to spirituality at Free WesternU and Borders Seminars
Paul DeBell, MD, a psychiatrist and faculty member at New York Medical
School, will discuss a scientific approach to spirituality at Western
University of Health Sciences (WesternU) on Wednesday, March 24.
Dr. DeBell will speak on campus at noon in Prem Reddy Hall, Health
Professions Center. His talk is free and open to the public. A
complimentary lunch will be served.
Sponsored by the University’s Humanism in the Health Sciences Committee,
Dr. DeBell will share his experiences in trying to achieve a balance
between science and spirituality in his own life. The title of his talk
is “”Lunch, Altruism and Spiritual Intelligence: A New Approach to
Digestion.””
The Cornell Medical College graduate also will discuss “”Exercise Your
Spiritual Intelligence”” and present the book Foundations of Natural
Spirituality by Bahram Elahi, MD, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 25 at
Borders Books & Music in Montclair.
By using what he defines as spiritual intelligence, Dr. DeBell suggests
that individuals will be able to more effectively resolve the deeper
conflicts in their lives.
Dr. DeBell has 20 years experience in clinical and academic psychiatric
practice, working both in the community and private practice settings. He
has taught family therapy, hypnotherapy, individual psychotherapy and
pharmacotherapy to psychiatric residents, psychologists and social
workers. He has made several presentations in different countries,
including a presentation to the American Psychiatric Association. He
currently is director of adult psychiatric OPD at Lincoln Medical and
Mental Health Center in New York City.
WesternU’s Humanism in the Health Sciences Committee is comprised of
students, faculty and staff who work to support and encourage scholarly
activities that promote humanism. In 1998, the Committee hosted author
Paul Hendrickson and artist Jan Herman.
Both events are free and open to the public. For reservations for the
WesternU noontime lecture, please call the University’s Events and
Programs Department at 469-5365.
