WesternU College of Graduate Nursing alumna publishes maternal health crisis textbook
Western University of Health Sciences College of Graduate Nursing (CGN) alumna Lisa R. Roberts, DrPH, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, CHES, published a graduate-level nursing text and professional clinical reference on the escalating crisis in maternal health.

“The maternal health crisis in the U.S. is important for nursing students and professional clinicians to be aware of—it comes as rather a shock to many, that we have the highest maternal mortality among developed nations—and our understanding of the crisis must evolve to inform advocacy and change in practice,” Roberts said.
Roberts, a 2001 graduate of CGN’s Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner program, is research director and professor at Loma Linda University School of Nursing.
As a College of Graduate Nursing alumna, Dr. Roberts is recognized as a principal scholar and mentor in the area of women’s health in the United States and around the world. Her work inspires current students to respond to issues with scientific evidence and compassionate human touch, said WesternU College of Graduate Nursing Dean Mary Lopez, PhD, RN.
“Dr. Roberts’ textbook on the maternal health crisis in America highlights one of the most important issues confronting women today. World Health Organization statistics show that most of maternal deaths occur at home in our communities,” Lopez said. “High among reasons for maternal death is lack of social support needed for women to recognize warning signs including abnormal bleeding, infection and signs of hopelessness.”
“Dr. Roberts points out that we all need to step up and support the well-being of mothers,” Lopez added. “Mothers forget to advocate for themselves, so we need to listen to moms and support them.”
