WesternU’s Austin Lecture focuses on The Vulnerable Child
Western University of Health Sciences’ 4th Annual Dr. Robert L. Austin Endowed Lectureship in Pediatric Medicine and Pediatric Health Care Policy will feature a groundbreaking leader in developing critically needed medical, legal and social services to families affected by violence.
The lecture will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at WesternU’s Health Education Center, Lecture Hall I, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766.
“”The Vulnerable Child: A Challenge to Multi-disciplinary Pediatric Care”” will be presented by keynote speaker Astrid Heppenstall Heger, MD, Executive Director of the Violence Intervention Project at Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center, and a professor of clinical pediatrics at USC’s Keck School of Medicine.

Eight WesternU students commit to working in underserved areas
Eight Western University of Health Sciences students earned National Health Service Corps (NHSC) scholarships by committing to practice in underserved areas.
College of Dental Medicine students Long Cao, DMD ’17, Asya Gyurjyan, DMD ’18, and Tracy Ngo, DMD ’18; College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) students Cristian Carrillo, DO ’18, and Andrew Shore, DO ’18; and three other students who declined to be named were selected due to their academic excellence and commitment to service through health care.

Pharmacy, podiatric medicine and physical therapy are among the top 10 health care jobs in 2015, according to the website CareerCast,

Fallen Pomona Police officer Shaun Diamond honored at presentation
Brett Boston, director of Environmental Health Safety and Security at Western University of Health Sciences, presented a plate, a plaque and pictures to Pomona Police SWAT Division honoring fallen Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond, who died Oct. 29, 2014, one day after he was shot serving a search warrant.
The presentation was held Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 at the Pomona Police Department Training Facility. Pomona Police SWAT and Los Angeles Police Department SWAT were present.

Quannetta T. Edwards, PhD, FNP-BC, WHNP-BC, AGN, FAANP, Professor in the College of Graduate Nursing, has received board certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Advanced Genetics Nurse (AGN). Dr. Edwards has received prior genetics training through the Genetics Education Program for Nurses, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital; Genetics Summer Institute at the National Institute of Health, sponsored by the National Institute of Nursing Research; and through the City of Hope, Clinical Cancer Genetics two-year Fellow Program.

Robert A. Christman, DPM, EdM, has accepted an invitation to facilitate a one-day diagnostic imaging Masterclass at the 2015 Australasian Podiatry Conference to be held at Gold Coast, Australia in May.
Also, Part 4 of Dr. Christman’s five-part Special Section, Radiographic Anatomy of the Foot and Ankle, was published in the January/February 2015 issue of the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association (JAPMA). Part 4 focuses on the metatarsals.

The Medical Anatomy Center (MAC) produced three oral platform presentations and 10 poster presentations on innovative basic, and clinical science research at the recent Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of Oregon Conference, February 2015. Seventeen COMP-Northwest students – Eric Vinceslio, Scott Sweeny, Babe Westlake, Matthew Noble, Nate Dodge Waylon Pearson, Tyler Andrea, Adam Burch, Cody Hull, Adam Mina, Jesse Gortner, Waylon Pearson, Andrew Hadeed, Lyman Wood, Maranda Herner, Rebecca Corbett and Jonathan Shader – gave presentations. Additionally, one external medical student, Jake Sharp, one external dental student, Chris Harlan, one anesthesiology resident, Dr. Hemra Cil, and one baccalaureate student, David Horn, gave presentations. These students were mentored by MAC Executive Director Brion Benninger, MD, MSc, with special thanks for additional mentoring to research faculty Drs. John Mata and Jean-Louis Horn.

Alumni networking mixer in Glendale
More than 20 alumni from several WesternU colleges attended an alumni networking mixer at Frida Mexican Cuisine in Glendale. Our energetic alumni enjoyed great food and drinks as they rekindled their relationships, while others met new friends from across colleges representing classes from 1991 through 2014. Old friends Narbae Avedian, OD ’14, and Andrew Babayan, OD’14, were able to reminisce after not seeing one another since their WesternU graduation ceremony. WesternU’s alumni networking mixers provide a way for our graduates to reconnect. The next alumni networking mixer will be held in Orange County in April.
