Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) has received a $50,000

grant from The Hearst Foundation for establishment of The William Randolph

Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The grant will help fund student scholarships. Eventually it will be put

toward funding six full-tuition awards, one each for the College of

Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP), the College of Pharmacy, the

College of Veterinary Medicine, and the College of Graduate Nursing, as

well as WesternU’s Master of Physical Therapy and Primary Care Physician

Assistant programs in the College of Allied Health Professions.

Tuition for programs at WesternU ranged from $12,500 to $23,570 for the

1998-’99 academic year.

“”We’re very pleased to be recognized for the work we’re doing by an

organization with such a strong national reputation,”” said WesternU

President Philip Pumerantz, PhD. “”We look forward to continuing our

relationship with The Hearst Foundation for many years to come.””

The Hearst Foundation funds approximately 700 endowments nationally, and

selected WesternU as a grant recipient because of the University’s

dedication to educating primary care health professionals.

“”We’re concerned about the shortages of nurses and doctors, and we felt

WesternU was handling the situation well with the enrollment of 1,300

students,”” said Thomas Eastham, vice president and western director for

The Hearst Foundation.

The organization was founded in 1945 by publisher and philanthropist

William Randolph Hearst. The charitable priorities of the foundation

include education, health, human services and culture.

WesternU will select the scholarship award recipients based on academic

performance and financial need. Applicants must also express a strong

desire to practice primary health care in rural, urban or medically

underserved areas.
