Austin Lecture

Western University of Health Sciences is proud to announce the third Dr. Robert L. Austin Endowed Lectureship in Pediatric Medicine and Pediatric Health Policy, featuring keynote speaker Deborah Klein Walker, EdD, at 5:30 p.m. March 15, 2012 in the Health Education Center, Lecture Hall 1, 701 E. Second St., Pomona, Calif. 91766.

PCHAT Pediatric Clinic

PCHAT will hold a free pediatric clinic from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Boys and Girls Club of Pomona Valley, 1420 S. Garey Ave., Pomona, Calif.

WesternU students in the osteopathic medicine, physician assistant and optometry programs will conduct physical examinations, blood glucose screenings and vision screenings overseen by faculty members. There will also be educational activities focused on hand washing, nutrition, exercise, the human body and eye care. Children of all ages are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult.

Kudos on accomplishments

Dr. Orlando has been promoting WesternU and COMP at numerous musical events, including a major presidential concert of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony reflecting on 9/11 in Washington, D.C./Bethesda in September 2011 with the World Doctors Orchestra (WDO) headquartered in Berlin, Germany; highly acclaimed twin concerts in Taipei, Taiwan; three concerts in Shanghai and Beijing, China; and a concert in December at the Lincoln Center in New York with the renowned World Civic Orchestra. Dr. Orlando has been selected as the only community brass musician to be invited to perform with the University of Southern California Concert Orchestra, which regularly performs major and challenging orchestral works. Dr. Orlando’s past musical associations included the NBC studio band, Radio City Music Hall Orchestra in New York City, the Tonight Show Band, Broadway shows and orchestras in New York City, New Jersey, Chicago and Los Angeles, but, Dr. Orlando always says, “My most rewarding performances are my lectures at COMP and finding most of the students who have attended my lectures did well on the questions in Dr. Parsa’s pathology exams.”

Jenny Amin, OMS-III, had her abstract accepted for the Healthy People Conference, which will take place on Tuesday, March 6-7 at Loma Linda University Drayson Center auditorium. Her poster is titled, “Disparities in stroke awareness among Hispanics and Non-Hispanics: a community based participatory research (CBPR) project.” Click here for more information.

Marek Malecki, MD, PhD, an Associate Professor of Genetics, Genomics, and Gene Therapy, was an invited speaker at the inaugural International Symposium on Point of Care Testing in San Francisco on Feb. 19, 2012. He presented “Molecular Profiling of Cancer with Point-of-Care Tests.” The microarray devices, which he designed, developed and presented, may play a critical role in the early diagnosis of patients in the areas with poorly developed health care systems, sailors on the seas, or soldiers in the remote battle fields. http://www.triconference.com/point-of-care-testing

Jay Shubrook, DO, from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, visited the Western Diabetes Institute (WDI) Feb. 14, 2012. Dr. Shubrook, principal investigator of INSPIRE Diabetes Trial (Intensive Insulin Regimen as a Primary Treatment of New Onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus), for which WDI recently received a $65,000 grant, visited with Dr. Andrew Pumerantz, Infectious Disease, Chair of Internal Medicine, Dr. Edward Barnes, Nephrology and Hypertension, Dr. Rucha Mehta, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, Dr. Airani Sathananthan, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, Dr. Cesar Ochoa, Clinical Research Coordinator and Melanie Barbee, Registered Dietitian, and presented an overview of the status of the research. The study, or trial, will be offered at WDI in the near future.
