COMP-Northwest welcomes inaugural class
COMP-Northwest, the Pacific Northwest campus of Western University of Health Sciences’ (WesternU) College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP), formally welcomed its inaugural class of 107 students Saturday, July 30, 2011, during Convocation and white coat ceremonies held on the COMP-Northwest campus in Lebanon, Oregon. Kudos on accomplishments
Dr. Brion Benninger, Professor of Clinical Anatomy COMP-NW and faculty at Samaritan Health Orthopaedic Residency, was invited to present his ultrasound research at the summer World Congress of Ultrasound in Medicine meeting held in Columbia, South Carolina. Click here to read more.
In Dr. Benninger’s lab, 16 mentored students have won top national research awards in clinical science, basic science, and educational research. A total of 18 projects representing up to two years of work each were blind- and peer-reviewed and accepted and published at a national meeting. Click here to read more.
The American Osteopathic Association Council on Research and the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation approved a grant submitted by Marcel Fraix, DO, FAAPMR, to fund the study “Effectiveness of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) and Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) Alone or in Combination on Balance and Visual Function in Patients with Vertigo and Somatic Dysfunction.” This grant will allocate $99,790 over the span of two years to support of the efforts of an interdisciplinary research team consisting of members from the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine in COMP, Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Allied Health Professions and the College of Optometry. Research efforts will focus on examining the efficacy of OMT and VRT in individuals suffering from dizziness and vertigo.
COMP Chief Technology Officer and Assistant Professor Scott Helf, DO, was a speaker for two sessions at Campus Technology 2011 in Boston July 25-28, representing COMP, COP, CDM, CPM, and GCBS. The titles were “Learner Analytics via the Cloud: Sophisticated Statistics Made Easy,” and “Academic Progress Portal: Catching Students BEFORE They Fail.”

MSHS 25th Anniversary
The Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) program will celebrate its 25th anniversary when classes resume on Aug. 8, 2011. Congratulations to Professor David Selkowitz, PT, PhD, OCS, DAAPM, for having his research, “The Influence of Patellofemoral Pain on Hip Muscle Activation During Therapeutic Exercise: A Pilot Study Using Fine-Wire Electrodes,” accepted for a podium presentation at the upcoming California Physical Therapy Association Annual Conference Sept. 22-23 in Long Beach.

Veterinary Professor Dr. Wael Khamas and alumnus Richard Reeves, DVM ’09, have published a manuscript.
